Estrogen is the main female hormone. Its production increases during puberty. This allows females to release eggs from their ovaries and to start their periods.

These eggs are human eggs. Human eggs are much smaller than chicken eggs. They are about the size of a very small grain of sand!

This happens to prepare a girl's body to have a baby. Just because a person CAN have a baby, that does NOT mean that they need to have a baby.

As females grow into adults, they will start to have their period, also called menstruation.

Once every month, the uterus will lose some blood. The blood will come out of the vagina for a few days. This is normal.

Every month, a human egg is released from an ovary.
If the egg does not meet a sperm in the uterus, the woman will not be pregnant and will have a period.

If the egg meets a sperm after male and female sex, the female will get pregnant and will not have a period until her baby is born.

There are certain menstrual products to use during a period.

You can use a warm water bottle or a heating pad for cramps.
There is also medicine to help ease the pain. You can talk to an adult or a doctor about taking medicine.

Sometimes, periods can cause body pains, like cramps or breast pain.

It is good to throw out used menstrual products, to change underwear, and to shower regularly during a period.

Female anatomy is made up of different parts.
Females have breasts, also called boobs.
Female genitals contain the vulva and the vagina.

Breasts are sensitive. Some girls get bras to support and protect their growing breasts.

As girls grow up, their nipples get darker and their breasts get bigger. This happens because female hormones tell the milk glands (lobes) in the breasts to grow larger

Most females have a uterus. The uterus is the organ where a baby can grow. Period blood comes from the uterus.

The vulva has many parts. A female can see her vulva with the help of a mirror.

Vulvas look different on different people.
